Assignment Instructions
For this assignment, you will be selecting 2 works of art from the exhibition “Art in the Time of
Pandemic” that you find interesting. Since there are 2 parts to this online show, I’d like to select 1
artworksfrom Part 1 (abstract artwork) and 1 artworks from Part 2 (representational artworks) to
focus on. Part 1 contains abstract artwork. This means that you may not recognize the subject
matter in a piece OR you may recognize the subject matter, but it’s not realistic. Part 2 contains
representation artwork. This means you should be able to recognize the subject matter. I’m
having you select 2 images from each part of the exhibit so you can think about what you’re
intrigued by in both abstract and representational works.
STRUCTURING YOUR ASSIGNMENT
Read the assignment thoroughly.
In your first paragraph, introduce what you know about this exhibition by the artwork you see in it
and the supplementary writing by the curator and the artists. What is your impression by both
Part 1 and Part 2 of the exhibition. Make sure to look through both sections before you write this
paragraph. Think about what you’re intrigued by or repelled by – do you like bright colors; visible
brush marks; tidy, sharp edges or loose painterly edges. Keep in mind that all the artwork in this
virtual exhibition was made during, and reflects, something about the pandemic/circumstances
occurring during the pandemic. Think about where you see references to this time period in the
work, and where you see artists reflecting something more peaceful as a counterbalance to the
times we’re living through.
In the second paragraph, introduce the first work of art you’re discussing from the exhibition.
Include the artist’s name, “title of the artwork”, (put parenthesis around the title). Then describe
why you’ve chosen this piece, and how it reflects the title of the exhibition. Please include an
image of the artwork in the text of your assignment.
In third paragraph, introduce the second work of art you’re discussing from the exhibition. Include
the artist’s name, “title of the artwork”, (put parenthesis around the title). Then describe why
you’ve chosen this piece, and how it reflects the title of the exhibition. Please include an image of
the artwork in the text of your assignment.
In the fourth paragraph, talk about what you’ve learned from this assignment and your
observations. Are you surprised by the artwork you responded? Or did you find your selections to
be consistent with what you know about artwork you like? (This paragraph is a concluding
paragraph, so try to tie things up hear. You should have a minimum of 5 sentences in this
paragraph.
Assignments may be1 ½ – 2 pages, or more, in 12 pt. font, double-spaced. Please include
images of the artwork in your paper (you can drag them onto your desktop and then insert them
into your paper).
